Superman is a visitor from a distant planet who is an enduring emblem of the "American dream" (wich in reality is built on debt). As the economic crisis arises, I see ”I am, I am, I am Superman” as a commentary on the current U.S. policy. The title is derived from REM’s ”Superman” lyrics.
